Process

Hi!

Thought I'd quickly share my process of making the sugar coated paintings.

I've done something similar quite a few times now but maybe in slightly different ways.

As you can see from the photo, I've written myself some instructions on bits of paper which I folded up and then picked out without looking, for instance -

Draw a straight line

Draw a circle

Place it consciously

Place it without looking

Pencil shade it in

Paint it

Join together the last two moves

Pink

Green

Finding a way to work more subconsciously to go with the flow, to simply not overthink or over work is a big part of my practice, I looked at this a lot whilst writing my dissertation which was about how chance is used in various ways by artists often as a way to bring something else other than conscious thought into their work. Some would let their process and or materials themselves lead the way / do their own thing, others also might work in a similar way to my method here, by sort of pre setting up a situation then following it through.

So, I might follow these 'rules' I've set up for myself for a while and then when I think it's at a point where it could now go in a wrong direction, I let myself intervene with a a tweak here and there, an outline, some blocking out or whatever
